The Little Habits That Help Us Show Up With Confidence
Have you ever noticed that many successful people have little routines they follow before something important?
Some people always wear the same lucky tie before a presentation.
Athletes often have a routine before a game.
Musicians prepare the same way before they walk on stage.
Some people write in a journal every morning.
Others start their day with a walk, a cup of coffee, or a few quiet minutes before the day begins.
Are those routines magical?
Probably not.
But they do something just as important.
They prepare us.
More Than Just Good Luck
Over the years, I've heard all kinds of stories about good luck.
Finding a coin on the sidewalk.
Avoiding walking under a ladder.
Seeing a white horse.
Even putting a broom upside down before an outdoor event because someone once told us it would keep the rain away.
Whether those traditions are true or not isn't really the point.
What fascinates me is why we keep them.
I recently listened to Amy Cuddy talk about rituals, and one idea really stayed with me.
She explained that rituals help our brains deal with uncertainty.
That made perfect sense to me.
Life is full of uncertainty.
Business is full of uncertainty.
Networking certainly is.
Maybe our little rituals aren't really about changing the outcome.
Maybe they help change us.
The Confidence to Keep Going
When I started my first business, I didn't know exactly how everything would work out.
Like many entrepreneurs, I had moments where I questioned myself.
Would people buy?
Would I meet the right people?
Was I making the right decisions?
Looking back, I realize that many of the little habits I developed weren't about luck.
They helped me stay positive.
They reminded me to keep moving forward.
Every week, I still set an intention.
Sometimes it's learning something new.
Sometimes it's finding someone in a particular profession.
Sometimes it's simply being open to whatever opportunities come my way.
I don't know exactly how those answers appear.
I just know that when I'm paying attention, I notice opportunities I might have missed before.
We All Have Our Own Rituals
Your ritual doesn't have to look like mine.
Maybe yours is taking a deep breath before walking into a networking event.
Maybe it's reviewing your goals every morning.
Maybe it's writing down three things you're grateful for before bed.
The ritual itself isn't what matters most.
It's the mindset it creates.
When we begin our day expecting good things, we often approach people differently.
We're more relaxed.
More curious.
More confident.
And those small changes influence every conversation we have.
Choosing What We Focus On
One thought I come back to often is this:
We can spend our energy imagining everything that could go wrong.
Or we can spend it imagining everything that could go right.
Neither one guarantees the outcome.
But one certainly makes the journey more enjoyable.
I think that's why I enjoy networking so much.
Every conversation holds possibility.
Every introduction could become a friendship.
Every event is another opportunity to learn something new.
That's a much more exciting way to approach life than worrying about everything that might not happen.
Keep Building Real Connections
This week, think about the little habits that help you feel your best.
They don't have to be complicated.
Sometimes the smallest rituals are the ones that quietly remind us to believe in ourselves.
If you'd like more networking tips, stories, and upcoming events, I'd love for you to join my newsletter.
And if you enjoy learning through real conversations, be sure to listen to my podcast, Network = Networth, where we explore the power of relationships, confidence, and community.
Because sometimes success doesn't begin with a big moment.
Sometimes it begins with a small ritual that helps us take the next step.
