Business Cards Aren’t Dead — You Just Have to Know How to Use Them

With everything going digital these days, I often hear people say, “Nobody uses business cards anymore.” And every time, I smile, because I absolutely still do.

Not only do I use them, I enjoy it. Business cards may feel old-school to some, but when used well, they’re still one of the most effective tools in your networking toolkit.

The key is knowing how to use them: with purpose, with intention, and with just a little creativity.

Why I Still Use Business Cards — And You Might Want To

A business card is more than just your name and contact info on a piece of paper. It’s a small moment that can leave a lasting impression. A seed you’re planting. And like any good seed, it needs time, care, and the right environment to grow.

I’ve seen it time and time again: One card, in the right hands, can lead to the right conversation, a new opportunity, or a great referral.

You don’t need to hand out hundreds, sometimes, just one is all it takes.

How to Use Business Cards Effectively (And Intentionally)

This isn’t about dropping your card on a table and hoping someone calls. It’s about being thoughtful in how you share it and how you show up. Here are three ways I use my cards with strategy and purpose:

1. I Always Give Out Two

One for the person I’m speaking with and one for them to pass along. You never know who they know or when your name might come up in a conversation. That second card could lead to a warm referral without you even being in the room.

2.  I Leave Them in Unexpected Places

I carry push pins in my purse, and I use them!

I pin my cards to bulletin boards in coffee shops, local libraries, community centres, and even independent shops. These places might seem small, but they get noticed. One day, the right person walks by, and there you are.

3. I Tuck Them Into Books, Bags, and Gifts

If I’m lending a book, sending a thank-you package, or giving a small gift, I often slip in a card. It’s a subtle way to say, “Here’s how we can stay in touch.” Not flashy. But consistent. And consistency builds momentum.

What Not to Do with Business Cards

I once knew someone who ordered 500 beautiful business cards and never gave out a single one. Why? “They cost money.” But cards in a drawer don’t build relationships. Conversations do.

Here’s what I recommend avoiding:

  • Leaving cards on a table without context

  • Handing them out without first connecting

  • Waiting for the “perfect” moment to use them

Instead, make your card part of a real, human conversation. Let it be a follow-up, not your introduction. A card is just a bridge. You still have to walk across it.

The Power of Small, Intentional Moments

Networking doesn’t have to be loud or overwhelming. In fact, the most powerful connections often grow from small, thoughtful gestures.

Offering someone your card after a genuine conversation, a moment of shared insight, or even just a friendly exchange  can carry more weight than you realize.

So yes, I still use business cards. And I always will. You never know which one will open the right door at the right time.

Final Tips: How to Make Your Business Card Work for You

If you’re going to carry cards (and I hope you do), here are a few ways to make them even more effective:

  • Keep the design clean, simple, and professional — let it reflect you.

  • Add a QR code linking to your website, LinkedIn, or calendar.

  • Include a personal touch — a tagline, a short note, or a reminder of what you do.

And most importantly… Don’t be shy about sharing them.

When you treat every interaction as an opportunity to connect — not just to sell — networking starts to feel a whole lot more natural, and a whole lot more fun.
